What if your subject is does not have light or pale skin?

The theory examples above do not address darker skinned individuals. Below is one color zone plan for darker skin tones.

Color Zone Theory: It may not fit

These color zone theory maps are just a starting place. It is of first importance to look at your source, but knowledge of the maps may help you see color upon closer inspection, color that you did not see at first.

Also be aware that the color zones do not apply well to every person and/or every lighting scenario. Look over some of the photos of darker skin types below and compare them to the dark skin tone color map above.

Below are a number of photos of persons of color. Look carefully at the subtle colors present in their skin. Are they all the same? Do they match the model above? If not, how are they different from the model above? Discuss your observations with your professor and classmates.

In the photo directly above, does reflected light affect our perception of the man's skin color? If so, in what ways is it affected?
Go back and look at all of the other photos now and see if reflected light played a part in your perception in those images.

Take a close look at Sedrick Huckaby's self-portrait below. How does he use color in this image? Does it match the color zones graphic further up the page? If so how? If not, how does it differ?
