The Zorn Palette

The Zorn Palette

Anders Zorn (1860-1920) is perhaps for the most famous artist ever from Sweden. He is known most for his portraits. He was exceptionally gifted at capturing the likeness of his sitters. He painted many portraits including those of kings, queens, and three U.S. Presidents (Grover Cleveland, Howard Taft, and Teddy Roosevelt).

He used a very limited palette which is generally considered to have contained only vermillion (or cadmium red), yellow ochre, lead white, and black. Black in this set up served as a type of low chroma blue, so his palette has a red, yellow, blue, and a white.
